“If you have an autoimmune disease, then by definition you have a leaky gut that needs to be repaired, otherwise you won’t be able to reverse your condition.”

So if you read my last blog post you would have read the above statement…

Which is why I am dedicating this post to talk more about what is a leaky gut specifically & how you can go about healing it 🙂

So what is a leaky gut?

Simply, it is a condition in which the lining of the small intestine becomes damaged, causing undigested food particles, toxic waste products and bacteria to “leak” through the intestines and flood the blood stream.

Various conditions linked to leaky gut:

  • Autoimmune disease (check out my post on autoimmune disease here)
  • Digestive disorders (IBS, Celiac disease, Crohn’s) and food sensitivities
  • Skin disorders such as acne, psoriasis, and eczema
  • Arthritis
  • Autism
  • Depression
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome Fibromyalgia
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Kidney Disease
  • Obesity
  • Diabetes

What causes it?

People will hate me for this! But I believe inflammation causes it, which is a result of consuming inflammatory foods mainly GLUTEN & DAIRY!

& research have shown so, “Gluten is the number one cause of leaky gut. Other inflammatory foods like dairy or toxic foods, such sugar and excessive alcohol, are suspected as well. The most common infectious causes are candida overgrowth, intestinal parasites, and small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).”

What are the signs of a leaky gut?

Let me make it easier for you and send you over here to complete the quiz to find out – http://www.myleakygutsyndrome.com/leaky-gut-quiz/

Can it be fixed / healed?

YES!!!! Which We will do together 🙂

How long will it take to heal it?

You will start to feel better in few weeks, but this has to be maintained for 3-6 months before reintroducing foods Yes, I am sorry but we will have to avoid certain foods to heal this!)

First thing first, there is no one solution that fits all! I will summarize for you what the research has shown in regards, to diet, foods to avoid, supplements to take and general tips however most of this will be you using your intuition and experimenting cause guess what, each one of us requires a unique diet! Someone might not be able to tolerate eggs but you might be able to.

Secondly, you might want to have a look at the “healing diets” (Link) to get an idea of what it entails which are nicely summarized in this article as I will not be discussing the different diets here.

Depending on how severe your autoimmune disease is and realistically which diet can you stick to for few months is what I would go for but before that let me tell you how to ease yourself into….

Now I will share with you and summarize how I believe you can heal you gut. Like I said earlier there are 7 main foods that usually trigger inflammation (1st two being the WORSE!)

  1. Gluten
  2. Dairy
  3. Soy
  4. Peanuts
  5. Sugar
  6. Artificial sugar
  7. Corn

Along with cutting the above foods, you want to consume mainly fresh ingredients & limit or eliminate processed food entirely if you can.

So my way of hacking this will be through the Elimination diet. This might take the longest, however it is ideal for those with low to moderate leaky gut symptoms (Quiz), people want to figure out exactly what might be aggravating their symptoms, people with hectic lifestyle, and people (like me) who want to eliminate foods gradually and can’t just go cold turkey!

For some this might be a 30-60 day regimen, but for those who have severe symptoms you will need to stick to this for 2-3 years, if not longer (in which case I might consider the other healing diets here & experimenting).

Steps you need to take for elimination diet:

  1. Remove the foods listed above & anything else you think might trigger a negative response or inflammation. This is not limited to food, but also includes NSAIDs (ibuprofen, aspirin, and other pain killers), stress management, and healthy eating habits, such as eating slowly & chewing your food before swallowing.
  2. Add nutrients & foods that heal the gut, such as turmeric, ginger, pineapple, focusing mostly on fresh & organic (if you can) foods & eating mostly homemade meals.
  3. Aid your body by taking supplements that help repair the intentional lining and overall health, such as probiotics, zinc, l-glutamine, and a whole food multivitamin.
  4. Allow your body to rest when it needs to and assist it to manage stress by breaking a sweat, meditating, journaling, practicing gratitude & having fun!

Also Cut out and avoid processed foods, or foods with additives, immediately, which I am pretty sure will provide immediate relief for many people.

This is the 1st stage where you could eliminate all foods for at least 3 weeks and slowly introducing one by one and noticing if you have reaction.

OR you could slowly Eliminate 1 or 2 foods at a time for at least 3 weeks, gradually build up and then re-introducing them.  You can play around with it but you need to make sure that the food is eliminated for at least 3 weeks (the longer the better) before you reintroduce it.

Heal your body with fruits & vegetables

Other Foods worth testing out, as they have been shown to trigger inflammation:

  • Grains – including gluten free ones
  • Nuts
  • Seeds
  • Caffeine
  • Alcohol

Final notes

If you are coming from a high sugar highly processed diet, this might be a shock to your system and you body may “starve” for some of the trigger foods. You have to be strong and resist as this is your body just detoxing and often we crave what is harmful for us. Overtime, the gut-brain communication will realign and crave what your body needs versus what it was addicted to. Any diet may be difficult at first, but patience, practice, and determination is key! Once you begin to feel better, you’ll be happy you took those first few difficult steps. & you will probably never want to go back to the old you ever again! 🙂

Now, in my next post I will share with you a super fast method that will jump start your healing process. Reset your immune system, down regulate inflammation and allow you to “heal & seal” the gut lining in 3 days!

Perhaps you might want to start with this method I will share in the next post first then follow a healing diet or start your healing diet and try this method when you feel you are ready for a challenge!

Can you guess what my next post is about?

Stay tuned & follow on here to get notified when I post next 🙂

Hope you all have a wonderful day.
